East Dorset branch are sad to hear of the passing of Robert Southam. He was a founder member of the branch and one time Secretary. Latterly though he was our transport officer and his encyclopaedic knowledge and seemingly photographic memory of bus timetables often ensured we got where we needed to go and home again. He was a stalwart of branch trips, especially Don Spots, always starting with lunch in the first pub, or a Spoon’s mega-breakfast. He was a fervent supporter of Poole Beer Festival, he came to every one, usually having 2 or 3 of the strongest beers available.
Alongside his involvement in CAMRA he was a committed supporter of St Peter’s Church in Lower Parkstone, participating in the annual Passion Play and carrying the cross at church services. He was also recently secretary of the local branch of the Oddfellows Friendly Society. He clearly loved being involved in the social life of organisations, reflecting his big hearted personality. He was a real character who will be remembered by everyone who met him. Rest in Peace Robert.
